Entrustment of Personal Information Processing
Entrustment of personal information processing refers to the delegation of certain tasks to specialized contractors to provide smooth services to "Members." Personal information is processed only within the scope entrusted under the responsibility of the "Company." The "Company" carefully reviews whether the entrusted contractors have sufficient capabilities to protect "Members'" personal information.

휴런, 의료AI 고도화 넘어 사업화 시대 앞장

[의학신문·일간보사=오인규 기자] 고도화를 향해 박차를 가하던 의료AI 분야가 이제 각 영역에서 사업화를 목표로 분주한 움직임을 펼치고 있다. 특히 임상의가 직접 현장에 판단한 필요 기술을 현실화하며 괴리를 줄이기 위한 임상시험과 해외 인허가에 박차를 가하며 성과를 내고 있어 주목된다.

휴런 신동훈 대표(사진·길병원 신경과 교수)는 본지와 만난 자리에서 MD 주도의 ‘Clinical AI’를 기반으로 △파킨슨병 △뇌졸중 △치매 등 뇌신경질환 파이프라인을 개발하고 있다고 밝혔다.
신동훈 대표는 “보건복지부 국책 사업을 비롯한 기존의 연구들을 유지하기 위해 노력하던 중 뜻하지 않게 창업에 길로 들어서게 됐다”며 “병의 진행과 합병증을 줄일 수 있도록 진단과 치료에서 최적으로 활용하고, 신약개발에 있어서도 협력을 통해 가진 효과를 정량적으로 평가하면서 성공을 높일 수 있는 툴을 준비하고 있다”고 설명했다.
대표 제품인 'mPDia'는 파킨슨병을 AI로 진단하는 솔루션이다. 파킨슨병은 임상의 신경학적 진단과 방사선 PET 영상 판독을 통해 수행돼 조기진단 접근성이 매우 떨어지는 현실에 있었다.
이에 휴런은 기존에 불가능했던 MRI 영상만을 이용해 파킨슨병을 진단할 수 있는 방법을 개발했다. 파킨슨병 병소 특정 영역을 촬영할 수 있는 MRI 프로토콜과 전처리 방법을 만들며, 인공지능 모델을 통해 자동으로 파킨슨병 여부를 출력해낼 수 있도록 했다.

파킨슨병에 의해 신경변성이 발생하는 영역을 정량화하며 고유 표준 템플릿 기술과 인공지능 예측 모델을 통해 파킨슨병의 장기적 병기추적 및 예후예측 솔루션을 개발하고 있다.
기존에 주로 사용하는 PET·CT(양전자방출단층촬영) 진단방법이 아닌 MRI(자기공명영상)로 특정 뇌 손상 부위의 이상 징후를 파악해 의료인의 진단을 보조하는 제품으로, 진단기술의 차별성을 인정받아 식품의약품안전처로 부터 혁신의료기기로 지정받았다.
또한 골든타임이 존재하는 뇌졸중 분야에서도 아주대와 같이 협업을 하면서 상당한 진척을 이뤄냈다. 응급실에서 의사 결정에 필요한 정보를 빠르게 제공하며 실시간 판독 등 의료질 개선에 도움을 줄 수 있는 AI 장비를 공급하겠다는 것이다.
더불어 치매 치료에 있어서도 기존에 처리시간이 너무 오래 걸리고 정략적 분석이 어려웠던 툴을 대신하며, 단순 뇌위축도를 제공하는 보여주기 용이 아닌 실제 임상에서 활용될 수 있는 기법과 일관되게 분석될 수 있는 촬영기법을 개발하는 연구로 경과 추적 및 바이오마커 개발도 함께 진행하고 있다.
153억 규모 시리즈B 투자 성공 유치, 기술특례상장도 준비
한편 코로나19로 인해 글로벌 시장에 패닉이 오고 스타트업으로 치명적인 시기를 겪고 있고 있는 것은 휴런도 마찬가지였다.

하지만 이 와중에서도 153억 규모의 시리즈B 투자를 성공적으로 유치하며, 주요 질환별 파이프라인의 임상과 인허가를 진행하는데 활용할 수 있는 실탄을 확보했다.
신 대표는 “전 세계를 목표로 하고 있는 기업이기 때문에 위기감을 가지고 있었지만, 언택트에 대한 관심이 AI와 IT에 쏠리면서 도움이 된 측면이 있었다”며 “이를 바탕으로 비즈니스 모델을 만들 수 있도록 속도를 내야한다. 시간이 많지 않다”고 강조했다.
인터뷰를 마치며 그는 “길병원 의료기기융합센터 김선태 교수님을 비롯해 많은 분들이 인내를 가지고 도와줬는데 이 자리를 빌려 감사하다는 말을 전하고 싶다”며 “내후년 상반기 IPO를 목표로 하며 기술특례상장도 준비하고 있는 상태이며, 파트너쉽을 구축하며 5년 내 650억 매출을 목표로 하는 계획을 하나하나 현실화 시키겠다”고 자신감을 피력했다.
