Entrustment of Personal Information Processing
Entrustment of personal information processing refers to the delegation of certain tasks to specialized contractors to provide smooth services to "Members." 신동훈 휴런 대표 “AI 활용 뇌신경질환 조기진단” [메디컬 줌인]

“뇌질환이 삶의 걸림돌이 되지 않도록 하는 것이 목표”
실제 진료현장에서 필요한 것이 무엇인지 고민해온 임상의사가 주도적으로 2017년 설립한 의료 인공지능(AI) 기업 휴런. 신동훈 대표는 최근 본지와 만나 “뇌질환이 삶의 걸림돌이 되지 않도록 조기 진단해 모두가 온전한 삶을 누리는 세상을 만들고 싶었다”고 회사 설립 이유를 소개했다.
가천대길병원 신경과 교수이기도 한 신 대표가 AI 기술을 접하게 된 건 복지복지부 연구과제 수행을 하면서다. 그는 AI를 임상현장에 적용시켜 많은 환자들에게 도움을 주기 위해 창업을 결심했다. 현재 휴런은 뇌신경계 질환 진단을 보조하는 AI 솔루션 개발에 몰두하고 있다. 이 회사의 AI 솔루션은 뇌 의료영상 등에서 신경퇴행성 질환의 이미지 바이오마커를 정량 분석해 질병 진단을 보조한다.
신 대표에 따르면 파킨슨병은 환자 스스로 병이 발생해 증상이 나타나더라도 자신의 증세를 설명하기 어렵고, 노화에 따른 자연스러운 현상으로 받아들여 진단이 늦어지는 경우가 많다. 또 파킨슨병 진단을 위해선 양전자방출단층촬영(PET) 검사가 필요하지만 대학병원급에만 검사기기가 갖춰져 있어 지방에서는 진단이 쉽지 않고, 방사선 노출이라는 단점도 있다. 신 대표는 “휴런은 이러한 단점을 극복하고자 뇌 MRI 영상을 기반으로 하는 ‘Heuron IPD’를 개발했다. 기존 PET 검사와 유사한 성능을 보여 식품의약품안전처로부터 3등급 의료기기로 허가받았다”고 말했다.
“의사들 사이에서도 뇌신경계 질환은 난이도가 높고 데이터나 관련 정보 접근도 쉽지 않죠. 현재 휴런은 파킨슨, 알츠하이머, 뇌졸중, 뇌전이암 등을 대상으로 한 20여 개의 파이프라인을 보유하고 있다. 세계적으로 봐도 개념도 앞서고 진행속도도 빠른 편입니다.”
이와 함께 휴런은 세계 최초 비조영 컴퓨터단층촬영(CT) 기반 뇌졸중 통합 진단 보조 AI 소프트웨어도 개발했다. 해당 소프트웨어는 뇌 내출혈 발생 여부를 자동으로 분류하는 AI 솔루션인 Heuron ICH, 응급 뇌 대혈관 폐색을 예측하는 AI 솔루션 Heuron ELVO, 뇌경색에 따른 허혈성 병변 정도를 점수화한 Alberta Stroke Program Early CT Score(ASPECTS)의 자동화 AI 솔루션인 Heuron ASPECTS 등으로, 모두 식약처 3등급 허가를 받았다.
이러한 솔루션을 개발한 이유는 뇌졸중에서 가장 중요한 치료 ‘골든타임’ 때문이다. 신 대표는 “휴런의 AI 솔루션을 활용하면, 3분 내로 뇌출혈과 대혈관폐색 여부를 스크리닝할 수 있다. 현재 종합병원에서 뇌졸중 진단까지 3~4시간이 소요되는 상황이다. 골든타임 내에 치료를 받느냐에 따라 환자의 인생이 바뀐다. 행정적인 절차 등으로 골든타임을 넘기는 경우가 허다하다. 요즘 이슈가 되고 있는 응급의료전달체계 개선에도 큰 도움을 줄 수 있다”고 자신했다.
실제 회사측 에 따르면 AI 솔루션으로 진료 소요시간은 1시간 이상 단축시키고 환자 예후도 3배 이상 증가할 것으로 전망된다는 영국 국립보건서비스(NHS)의 연구결과도 있다.
회사 설립 목표처럼 AI 기술을 활용한다면 응급환자의 생존 가능성을 더 높일 수 있다는 것이다. 신 대표는 “AI 기술을 활용한다면 응급환자를 먼저 선별해서 알려줄 수 있고, 더 빠르게 환자를 분류해 치료할 수 있다. 의료영상을 판독할 전문의가 없는 곳에서 정확하고 빠르게 진단할 수 있다면 수술이 가능한 병원으로 빠른 이송이 이뤄질 수 있다”고 강조했다.
현재 휴런의 AI 솔루션은 가천대길병원, 아주대병원, 경기도의료원 안성병원, 삼육서울병원 등에서 사용 중이다. 신 대표는 “의료진도, 환자도 만족도가 높은 편이다. 다만, 건강보험 급여체계에 포함되지 않은 것은 아쉬운 점”이라며 휴런의 AI 솔루션 대부분이 전 세계 최초로 개발되다 보니 규제당국에서 평가를 내리기 어려워 한다고 설명했다.
신 대표는 “의료시장에서의 AI 활용은 점점 증가할 것이다. 앞서가고 있는 국내 기업들이 뒤쳐지지 않도록 장기적인 안목을 갖고 좋은 솔루션이 개발될 수 있도록 지원해야 한다”고 당부했다.
회사 성장 계획도 긍정적이다. 휴런은 시리즈A부터 시리즈C까지 총 333억 원을 투자받았다. 회사 측은 AI 솔루션이 보건의료연구원(NECA)으로부터 신의료기술평가에서 안전성·유효성을 인정받고 본격적인 매출이 발생하는 시점에서 기업공개(IPO)를 진행할 계획이다. 목표는 내년 하반기다.
해외 진출에도 적극 나선다. 신 대표는 “올해 내로 미국 식품의약국(FDA)으로부터 허가를 받기 위해 자사의 AI 솔루션 임상시험수탁기관(CRO)도 선정해뒀다. 동남아, 일본, 대만도 적극 공략할 예정”이라고 밝혔다.
